Preparing for College Interviews: Top 10 Questions

College interviews can be nerve-wracking, but preparation makes all the difference. Here are the 10 most common questions and how to approach them.

1. "Tell me about yourself."

Give a 2-minute overview that highlights your interests, achievements, and personality. Don't recite your resume.

2. "Why are you interested in our school?"

Be specific. Mention programs, professors, traditions, or opportunities unique to that school.

3. "What's your favorite subject and why?"

Go beyond "I like it." Share a specific moment or project that ignited your passion.

4. "Tell me about a challenge you've overcome."

Use the STAR method. Focus on what you learned, not just what happened.

5. "What do you do outside of school?"

Highlight 2-3 activities with depth. Show passion and impact.

6. "Where do you see yourself in 10 years?"

Be honest but thoughtful. It's okay to be uncertain — show you've thought about it.

7. "What would you contribute to our campus?"

Connect your interests and skills to specific campus opportunities.

8. "What's a book/article/podcast that influenced you?"

Choose something genuine and be ready to discuss it in depth.

9. "Do you have any questions for me?"

ALWAYS have questions. Ask about the interviewer's experience, campus culture, or specific programs.

10. "Is there anything else you'd like us to know?"

Use this to address anything your application doesn't cover.
