Choosing a major is one of the most stressful decisions for college students. Here's a framework I've developed over years of advising.

Step 1: Self-Assessment

Ask yourself:

• What subjects make me lose track of time?
• What problems do I want to solve in the world?
• What skills do I naturally excel at?
• What kind of work environment do I want?

Step 2: Research Career Outcomes

Look at actual data:

• What do graduates with this major actually do?
• What's the employment rate and median salary?
• What industries hire these graduates?
• What additional education might be needed?

Step 3: Talk to People

• Current students in the major
• Professors in the department
• Professionals working in related fields
• Alumni who graduated with that major

Step 4: Test Before Committing

• Take introductory courses in your top 3 choices
• Seek internships or research opportunities
• Attend department events and lectures

Important Truths:

• Your major doesn't determine your career (most people work outside their major)
• Double majors and minors exist for a reason
• It's okay to change your mind (most students do)
• Passion + practicality = the sweet spot

The best major is one that genuinely interests you AND opens doors to careers you'd enjoy. Don't choose based solely on salary projections or parental expectations.
