Common App vs Coalition App: Which Should You Use?

Most students default to the Common App, but the Coalition Application is worth considering. Here's a quick comparison.

Common App:

  • Accepted by 1,000+ schools
  • More widely recognized
  • One personal essay (650 words)
  • Straightforward interface
  • Most counselors are familiar with it

Coalition App:

  • Accepted by 150+ schools (mostly selective)
  • Includes a "locker" for storing materials over time
  • One personal essay (500-650 words)
  • Designed to be more accessible for underserved students
  • Some unique essay prompts

My Recommendation:

Use the Common App as your primary platform. Only use the Coalition App if a school you're applying to requires it or if you prefer its essay prompts.

Some schools accept both — in that case, it doesn't matter which you use. The application is reviewed the same way regardless of platform.

Pro tip: Some state universities have their own application systems (UC Application, ApplyTexas) that may be required. Check each school's requirements early.
