MBA Application Timeline: 12 Months to Your Dream Program

Applying to top MBA programs requires strategic planning. Here's a month-by-month timeline I use with my clients.

12-10 Months Before Deadline:

  • Research programs and create your target list
  • Begin GMAT/GRE preparation
  • Start building relationships with potential recommenders

9-7 Months Before:

  • Take the GMAT/GRE (leave time for a retake)
  • Attend information sessions and campus visits
  • Begin drafting your resume in MBA format

6-4 Months Before:

  • Start essay brainstorming and outlining
  • Request letters of recommendation
  • Complete first drafts of essays

3-2 Months Before:

  • Finalize essays through multiple revision rounds
  • Prepare for interviews (behavioral + case)
  • Complete all application forms

1 Month Before:

  • Final review of all materials
  • Submit applications
  • Send thank-you notes to recommenders

Key Tips:

  • Round 1 (September) typically has the highest acceptance rates
  • Your "why MBA" and "why this school" essays are the most important
  • Work experience quality matters more than quantity
  • Interview preparation should include mock interviews with feedback

Don't underestimate the time investment. Most successful applicants spend 100-200 hours on their applications.
